Hoch oben, auf einem in der Stadt zentral gelegenen Berg, genauer gesagt auf einem vor 340 Millionen Jahren <strong>erloschenen Vulkan<\/strong>, thront das Edinburgh Castle. Es wirkt fast so, als w\u00fcrde es aus luftiger H\u00f6he auch heute noch \u00fcber die Stadt wachen und sie besch\u00fctzen. <\/p>\n<h3>Herrlicher Ausblick<\/h3>\n<p>Der <strong>120 Meter lange Aufstieg<\/strong> zum Edinburgh Castle ist nicht beschwerlich und f\u00fcr Alt und Jung gut machbar. Belohnt wird man oben mit einem herrlichen Blick \u00fcber die Skyline der Stadt und die reizvolle Umgebung der <strong>Schottischen Highlands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Die Sch\u00e4tze des Edinburgh Castle<\/h3>\n<p>Die Architektur des Edinburgh Castle ist \u00e4u\u00dferst beeindruckend. Der \u00e4lteste erhaltene Geb\u00e4udeteil auf dem weitl\u00e4ufigen Gel\u00e4nde stammt aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. <\/p>\n<p>Im Inneren werden Sch\u00e4tze gezeigt wie die <strong>Honours of Scotland<\/strong> (die Kronjuwelen Schottlands), bestehend aus Krone, Staatsschwert und Zepter, und der sagenumwobene <strong>Stone of Scone<\/strong>. Auf diesem Stein wurden fr\u00fcher die schottischen und sp\u00e4ter auch die englischen K\u00f6nige gekr\u00f6nt. <\/p>\n<h3>G\u00e4nsehaut-Geschichte pur erleben<\/h3>\n<p>Das Edinburgh Castle war lange Zeit die K\u00f6nigsburg Schottlands. Auch die ber\u00fchmte schottische <strong>K\u00f6nigin Maria Stuart<\/strong> residierte hier. Sie wurde jedoch im Jahre 1567 von K\u00f6nigin Elisabeth I. gefangengenommen, zur Abdankung gezwungen und schlie\u00dflich 20 Jahre sp\u00e4ter wegen Hochverrats hingerichtet. Als Hauptkirche der presbyterianischen Kirchen wird sie auch als <strong>Wiege des Presbyterianismus<\/strong> bezeichnet.<\/p>\n<p>Im Jahr 1385 brannte die Kirche nieder und wurde im Stil der Gotik wieder aufgebaut. Kurz und knapp The Hub genannt, markiert dieses Geb\u00e4ude den h\u00f6chsten Punkt der Innenstadt.<\/p>\n<p>Urspr\u00fcnglich war The Hub eine im <strong>neugotischen Stil<\/strong> von 1839 bis 1844 errichtete Kirche, welche zur Church of Scotland geh\u00f6rte. Heute ist The Hub vor allem interessant durch ihren Stilmix, der \u00fcber die Jahrhunderte und die verschiedene Nutzung entstand.<\/p>\n<h3>Kirche \u2013 Parlamentssitz &#8211; Veranstaltungsort<\/h3>\n<p>Sehr viel sieht man von dem <strong>urspr\u00fcnglichen Kirchenbau<\/strong> nicht mehr, wenn man von dem noch immer vorhandenen Kirchturm absieht.
