Die ehemalige Festung thront hoch \u00fcber der Stadt und ist Pflicht f\u00fcr jeden Athen-Besucher. Die Anlage bestand schon im antiken Griechenland. Im 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. wurde sie durch die Perser zerst\u00f6rt und anschlie\u00dfend vollkommen neugestaltet. Sie beinhaltet unter anderem: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>die Propyl\u00e4en<\/li>\n<li>das Erechtheion<\/li>\n<li>den Niketempel<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Ein Tempel f\u00fcr die Stadtg\u00f6ttin<\/h3>\n<p>Das bekannteste Bauwerk der Akropolis ist der <strong>Parthenon<\/strong>, den man schon von weitem erblickt. Nach dem Sieg \u00fcber die oben erw\u00e4hnten Perser errichteten die Athener ihn zum Dank f\u00fcr ihre Stadtg\u00f6ttin Pallas Athena Parthenos. <\/p>\n<h3>Vielf\u00e4ltiger Einsatz<\/h3>\n<p>Abgesehen von seinem Tempel-Dasein wurde der Parthenon in seiner 2500-Jahre alten Geschichte bereits f\u00fcr einige weitere Zwecke genutzt. Er war eine Kirche, eine Moschee und zeitweise sogar ein Munitionslager. Nun werden hier <strong>tausende von Ausstellungsst\u00fccken<\/strong> der \u00d6ffentlichkeit gezeigt, die vom archaischen Zeitalter \u00fcber die klassische Antike bis in die Sp\u00e4tantike zur\u00fcckdatiert werden k\u00f6nnen. Sein Bau zog sich ganze 400 Jahre hin, vom 6. bis zum 2. Jahrhundert vor Chr. Heute stehen allerdings nur noch \u00dcberreste. Als Grund f\u00fcr die Zerst\u00f6rung wird ein Erdbeben im Mittelalter vermutet; anschlie\u00dfend wurde die besch\u00e4digte Tempelanlage als Steinbruch missbraucht und weiter abgetragen. Arch\u00e4ologische Arbeiten begannen erst im sp\u00e4ten 19. Jahrhundert. <\/p>\n<h3>Vorbei am Hadrianstor<\/h3>\n<p>Am Eingang zum Olympeon steht ein <strong>Triumphbogen<\/strong>, der einst als Ehrenmonument f\u00fcr den r\u00f6mischen Kaiser Hadrian erbaut wurde. Dieser war es auch, der den Bau des Olympeons schlie\u00dflich abschloss.
