Von hier oben sehen Sie die zwei kleinen Inseln Vlacherna und Pontikonissi, was auf Deutsch M\u00e4useinsel bedeutet.<\/p>\n<h3>Von Kanonen und M\u00e4usen<\/h3>\n<p>Der Aussichtspunkt verdankt seinen Namen einer Kanone, die zur Zeit der Napoleonischen Kriege an dieser Stelle von den Briten zur\u00fcckgelassen wurde, als diese vor den Franzosen fl\u00fcchten mussten. Dagegen ist die <strong>M\u00e4useinsel nach ihrer Form benannt<\/strong>, die von oben an eine Maus erinnert.<\/p>\n<h3>Ein verlassenes Kloster<\/h3>\n<p>Auf der M\u00e4useinsel befindet sich lediglich eine kleine Kapelle aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Die <strong>zweite Insel Vlacherni<\/strong> ist dagegen Heimat eines wei\u00df get\u00fcnchten Klosters. Es steht inzwischen leer, aber die dazugeh\u00f6rige Kirche kann besichtigt oder f\u00fcr Gebete besucht werden. Dabei war es urspr\u00fcnglich eine private Residenz, gebaut von einem britischen Lord High Commissioner. Erst Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ging sie in den Besitz der griechischen K\u00f6nigsfamilie \u00fcber.<\/p>\n<h3>Auf den Spuren der adligen Bewohner<\/h3>\n<p>In den 90er Jahren, fast drei Jahrzehnte nachdem der letzte griechische K\u00f6nig ins Exil ging, wurde Schloss Mon Repos vom griechischen Staat \u00fcbernommen. Einige Jahre sp\u00e4ter er\u00f6ffnete es als <strong>Museum<\/strong>. Zu den Ausstellungsst\u00fccken geh\u00f6ren einerseits arch\u00e4ologische Fundst\u00fccke und Informationen zum antiken Korfu, andererseits Gem\u00e4lde und M\u00f6bel, die den Besuchern das Leben der ehemaligen Schlossbewohner n\u00e4herbringen.<\/p>\n<h3>Parkanlage mit antikem Tempel<\/h3>\n<p>Obwohl die zum Schloss geh\u00f6renden Gr\u00fcnanlagen teilweise verwildert sind, lohnt sich ein kleiner Spaziergang. Die rund 130 H\u00e4user im venezianischen Stil zeugen von dem vergangenen Leben auf Korfu.<\/p>\n<h3>Wenn ein Dorf vergessen wird<\/h3>\n<p>Pal\u00e9o Per\u00edthia lebte traditionell von der Landwirtschaft. Als der Fischfang jedoch deutlich lukrativer wurde, <strong>verlie\u00dfen die Bewohner zunehmend den Ort<\/strong> und zogen unter anderem in das neugegr\u00fcndete N\u00e9a Per\u00edthia an der K\u00fcste. Die letzten Einwohner verlie\u00dfen das Dorf nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.<\/p>\n<h3>Neue Lebenszeichen<\/h3>\n<p>In Vergessenheit zu geraten hatte auch seine guten Seiten, denn so fiel Pal\u00e9o Per\u00edthia nicht dem Bau- und Betonboom der 70er und 80er Jahre zum Opfer. Inzwischen werden jedoch einige verfallene H\u00e4user restauriert, allerdings originalgetreu im <strong>venezianischen Stil<\/strong>. Sie ist dem <strong>heiligen Spyridon<\/strong> geweiht, einem zypriotischen M\u00e4rtyrer und dem Schutzheiligen von Korfu, dessen Gebeine sie beherbergt. Sie befinden sich seit dem mittleren 15. Jahrhundert auf der Insel, als ein einheimischer Priester die Reliquie erwarb.<\/p>\n<h3>Eine Kirche f\u00fcr den Heiligen<\/h3>\n<p>Im 16. Jahrhundert entstand die St. Spyridon Kirche, um die Gebeine zu beherbergen. Im 18. Und 19. Jahrhundert folgten dann die <strong>Ausschm\u00fcckungen des Innenraumes<\/strong> im Stil der Ionischen Malschule. Dazu geh\u00f6ren vor allem die Deckenmalereien mit an westlichen Vorbildern orientierten Ikonen.<\/p>\n<h3>Wunder und Huldigung<\/h3>\n<p>Immer wieder soll der heilige Spyridon im Laufe der Jahrhunderte Wunder bewirkt haben. Nicht zuletzt deswegen wird er viermal im Jahr mit einer <strong>Prozession durch die Stadt<\/strong> gefeiert. Im Torbau befindet sich zudem eine kleine Ausstellung mit Mosaiken aus der fr\u00fchchristlichen Basilika von Pale\u00f3polis.
