Jahrhundert, aber die n\u00f6tige Technik f\u00fcr die Umsetzung stand erst im 19. Jahrhundert zur Verf\u00fcgung. Nach 12 Jahren Bauzeit wurde der Kanal von Korinth <strong>im Jahr 1881 er\u00f6ffnet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Touristischer Wert<\/h3>\n<p>Durch seine geringe Breite und Tiefe ist der Kanal von Korinth nur f\u00fcr kleinere Schiffe passierbar. Dies lie\u00df seine Bedeutung f\u00fcr den Schiffsverkehr in der j\u00fcngeren Vergangenheit sinken. Trotzdem wird er immer noch jedes Jahr von rund 12.000 Schiffen passiert. Die \u00fcbrigen Kl\u00f6ster sind einsturzgef\u00e4hrdet oder bereits verfallen. Am bedeutendsten ist das <strong>Kloster Metarmorphosis<\/strong>. Es ist das \u00e4lteste der Meteora Kl\u00f6ster und wurde im 14. Jahrhundert auf einem 600 m hohen Felsen errichtet.<\/p>\n<h3>Aufstieg damals und heute<\/h3>\n<p>Beim <strong>Bau der Kl\u00f6ster im Mittelalter<\/strong> mussten s\u00e4mtliche Baumaterialien mit Lastz\u00fcgen auf die Felsinseln transportiert werden. Die M\u00f6nche kamen oft nur \u00fcber Strickleitern nach oben. Heute gibt es zum Gl\u00fcck gut angelegte Stra\u00dfen, welche die Anreise deutlich einfacher machen, und die Strickleitern wurden durch Treppen ersetzt.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tipp_center\"><b>Tipp:<\/b> Die Kl\u00f6ster liegen teilweise recht weit auseinander. Wenn Sie gut zu Fu\u00df sind, k\u00f6nnen Sie die Gelegenheit f\u00fcr eine ausgedehnte Wanderung nutzen. Der mit Abstand au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlichste Strand ist dabei die Bucht von Navagio, die den Beinamen Schmugglerbucht tr\u00e4gt.<\/p>\n<h3>Die Herkunft des Namens<\/h3>\n<p>Das markanteste Merkmal der Navagio Bucht ist ein <strong>altes Schiffswrack<\/strong>, das inzwischen zum Wahrzeichen der Insel avanciert ist. Es wurde einst von Schmugglern am Strand zur\u00fcckgelassen und ist heute vermutlich das beliebteste Fotomotiv von Zakynthos.<\/p>\n<h3>Spektakul\u00e4re Lage<\/h3>\n<p>Die Einzigartigkeit des Strandes wird noch unterstrichen durch seine ungew\u00f6hnliche Lage. Auf drei Seiten wird er von steilen Felsw\u00e4nden eingeschlossen, so dass die Bucht nur vom Wasser aus erreicht werden kann. Der Berg rechts von der Bucht kann jedoch vom Strand aus bestiegen werden. Hier erhalten Sie einen Einblick in die mittelalterliche Geschichte der Insel.<\/p>\n<h3>Einstiger Wohnsitz der Ritter<\/h3>\n<p>Der urspr\u00fcngliche Gro\u00dfmeisterpalast wurde im 14. Jahrhundert errichtet und war <strong>Sitz der Ritter des Johanniterordens<\/strong>. Sp\u00e4ter wurde er einige Zeit als Gef\u00e4ngnis genutzt, bis eine Explosion zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts gro\u00dfe Teile des Palastes zerst\u00f6rte. Nur das Eingangsportal und einige Rundt\u00fcrme blieben im Original erhalten. Der Rest wurde in den 30er Jahren rekonstruiert.<\/p>\n<h3>Heute ein Museum<\/h3>\n<p>Sie k\u00f6nnen zahlreiche Zimmer des Palastes besichtigen, in denen sich viele historische Einrichtungsgegenst\u00e4nde befinden. Der h\u00f6chste Gipfel des Olymps ist Mytikas, der es auf ganze 2.918 m bringt. Kein Wunder, dass die Menschen der Antike dieses m\u00e4chtige Bergmassiv f\u00fcr den Sitz der G\u00f6tter hielten.<\/p>\n<h3>Naturparadies Olymp<\/h3>\n<p>G\u00f6tter m\u00f6gen auf dem Olymp nicht wirklich zu finden sein, daf\u00fcr aber eine <strong>einzigartige Flora und Fauna<\/strong>. Aufgrund der F\u00fclle an teilweise endemischen Tierarten wurde das Gebiet 1981 von der UNESCO zum Biosph\u00e4renreservat erkl\u00e4rt. Eines der beeindruckendsten Zeugnisse dieser \u00c4ra sind die Ruinen des Knossos-Palastes, der auf rund 4.000 Jahre Geschichte zur\u00fcckblicken kann.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00dcberbleibsel der Antike<\/h3>\n<p>Der Knossos-Palast wurde in dem Zeitraum <strong>2100 bis 1800 v. Chr.<\/strong> errichtet. Mehrere Erdbeben und ein Vulkanausbruch im Jahr 1628 v. Chr. zerst\u00f6rten die Anlage jedoch. Auf den Ruinen baute man den Palast anschlie\u00dfend noch gr\u00f6\u00dfer und pr\u00e4chtiger wieder auf. Heute ist nur noch eine Ruine \u00fcbrig, aber selbst diese vermittelt einen Eindruck der einstigen Imposanz.<\/p>\n<h3>Architektonische \u00dcberreste<\/h3>\n<p>Einst hatte der Knossos-Palast bis zu f\u00fcnf Stockwerke auf einer Fl\u00e4che von 21.000 m\u00b2. Rund 800 Zimmer konnten bisher in den Ruinen nachgewiesen werden, aber vermutlich existierten einst um die 1.300. Damit ist der Knossos-Palast das <strong>gr\u00f6\u00dfte bekannte Bauwerk der minoischen Kultur<\/strong>.
