The history of the Louvre

The Louvre was not always a museum. The building complex was once the residence of French kings and, together with the Palais des Tuileries, formed the Paris city palace. In the 1980s, President François Mitterrand launched the Grand Louvre project, which not only transformed the Louvre Paris into a museum, but also made it the largest museum in the world. With more than 9 million visitors annually, he has undoubtedly succeeded.

Masterpieces in the Louvre Paris

The Louvre Paris houses numerous world-class works. The following works are particularly famous:

  • The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci: It is the main attraction in the Louvre Paris. It is actually a relatively small painting (77 x 53 cm). Nevertheless, you often have to queue up to catch a glimpse of this 16th-century painting, which is still shrouded in countless myths today.
  • The Venus de Milo: This sculpture is a masterpiece of sculpture and depicts the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Although it is still unknown who exactly created it, it continues to represent the female ideal of beauty in antiquity.
  • Michelangelo's The Rebellious Slave: This is a 2-metre-high statue from 1513. As the name suggests, it depicts a slave desperately trying to free himself from his chains. The Rebellious Slave is one of Michelangelo's greatest works.

But the building itself, the world-famous glass pyramid, is also a work of art today. In 1999, it was erected in the museum's courtyard as the crowning glory of the Grand Louvre project. At first, it was not necessarily well received. Initially dubbed the cheese dome, the Louvre Pyramid has now become a landmark of Paris.
